Museums with Îethka Content
Our research group has been looking in museum collections for belongings that originate in the Îethka communities living at Mînîthnî, Gahna, and Kiska Waptan. These are things the group is curious about for different reasons.
Below is a list of museums that have artifacts in their collections that we suspect may have links to the Îethka communities living at Mînîthnî, Gahna, and Kiska Waptan. We are not making claims to these belongings. We have gathered information about them so that we can explore what relations they might have to the Îethka communities living at Mînîthnî, Gahna, and Kiska Waptan.
Some of the keywords we have used to find these are "Stoney" "Nakoda" "Nakota" "Morley" "Eden Valley" and "Big Horn." We also search using common last names, and older terms for Îethka like Sioux or Assiniboine. Sometimes belongings will have names but not community titles (for example, Kaquitts, but not Stoney or Morley) so it's best to try several different searches if you have time. Many of the people responsible for creating these records would have no understanding of how the words Nakoda, Stoney, Sioux, or Morley are related, this is also why it helps to try different terms.
These museums would like to know more about these collections, so if you have knowledge about these things, you can contact Amanda, or contact the museum directly if you want to share. Sometimes museums are not the best place for these things, if you have better places to suggest you can contact Amanda or contact the museum directly too.
The links below connect to the museum website, and if possible the page where you can search the collection. I have picked images that might be of Îethka origins, but these are a small sample from the collection. Let me know if you want any assistance looking in collections or finding specific things, I would be happy to help. I have written about some of the challenges of searching collections on this website.
There are museums that have belongings that may be of interest to Îethka communities living at Mînîthnî, Gahna, and Kiska Wapan that do not originate there. Some of these include the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, the Ethnologisches Museum,
Amanda will keep adding museums as we find more. Please let us know if you know of museums that should be added. Museums also add to their collections and to the parts of their collections that they put online. I have included the last date checked to each entry below.
Canmore Alberta
2024
Some families have made donations to the archives and collections of the Canmore Museum. As far as we are aware, they are all of modern origins. (Post 2000). They are not tagged Stoney, or Îethka, or Nakoda, they can be found using family names.
