The First Nations Principles of OCAP®

OCAP® stands for Ownership, Control, Access, and Possession. A short summary of what it means is: any time information or data is collected about Indigenous people, those people should have ownership, control, access, and possession of the data and should be able to decide how it can be used. In this research, there was two types of data collected about Indigenous people, firstly I collected what they wanted to share with me during interviews. Secondly, I collected information in museums and archives about Îethkabi. Below you can watch a video that describes OCAP® there is much more information available on their website here. After that I describe how I am trying to care for the data I collected.

The First Nations Principles of OCAP®

"The First Nations principles of ownership, control, access, and possession – more commonly known as OCAP® – assert that First Nations have control over data collection processes, and that they own and control how this information can be used." (from the OCAP® website)

OCAP® in this Project

As part of this research I collected data from Îethkabi about their ideas and thoughts about museums. I also collected information about Îethkabi from museums and archives. There is no clear pathway to OCAP® in the Îethka communities, so I am trying to listen and learn. If you have ideas or concerns please contact me. You can also sign up to learn how this project is listening and learning here
